Karate chopping boards & clearing out early season cobwebs is how Geoff Brown & his friends including coach Duncan Mainland get ready for the winter. The boys enjoy good powder days riding park to pow laps in the hopes of finding their backcountry legs… but are quickly reminded that the backcountry is not the same as the park.
Check out the new Freestyle video with highlights from all our campers in the Whistler & Blackcomb Terrain Parks. The epic amount of snow days made it easy for park crew to build lots of well shaped features with soft landings right through till the end. With sunny skys in spring the freestyle crew managed to get some awesome days ripping laps and adding to thier bag of tricks.
That's a wrap for another successful and fun season of snowboarding here in Whistler. This year's campers saw many, many powder days enabling the coaches and campers to ride lots of challenging and varied terrain. Nothing seemed off limits with an abundance of trees to ride including the summer mountain bike trails. These off the trail runs are a maze of twisting, winding and rolling tracks through much of Whistlers mid to lower mountain runs, a fun natural border cross course.
One of the big highlights of all 12 week Pro Ride courses is the Mt Baker Resort Road trip. Why Mt Baker, this little local ski and snowboard resort located in Washington, USA? It receives a huge annual snowfall and currently holds the world record for the most snowfall in a season of ~30 meters in 1998-99. The ski area also host to the largest snowboard race in the world with 240 competitors in its annual Legendary Banked Slalom Race.

“Since November 1, we have received 98cm (38.5in) of natural snow as measured at our Pig Alley weather station on Whistler Mountain and we have another 45cm (18in) to 75cm (29.5in) in the forecast at higher elevations over the next few days,” says Doug MacFarlane, Director of Mountain Operations at Whistler Blackcomb. “
Tim Russell is the definition of a gentle giant, he loves nothing more than hand planting and mucking around in the park with friends or slashing through the trees on a powder day. Tim is so stoked on snowboarding; he truly enjoys teaching people and watching the excitement in their face when they land a new trick.
Tim has been part of the Pro Ride family for over 6 years making his knowledge of both Whistler and Blackcomb mountain quite extensive (he knows all the secret spots to get the best powder). We asked Tim to answer some questions so you can get to know him a little better.
