Whistler Opening Day Report & Video

Its Official, Whistler is now open for the 2013-14 winter season.

Excitement has been in the air the last week with rumours that Whistler would be opening, and on Saturday Nov 16th the mountain opened its slopes an astonishing thirteen days before the official November 28th opening date. Eager skiers and snowboarders set up camp at both the Whistler Village and the Creekside Gondolas to try their luck at catching the first ride to the top. With others joining the queue throughout the early hours of the morning, people stood in line with high spirits, sharing opening day stories and celebratory drinks. One keen bunch of riders went as far as setting up camp in the middle of the line cooking pancakes, bacon and eggs to get ready for their first day.

Into The Mind Teaser: Sherpas Cinema

This is a story of rising to the ultimate challenge. Having the courage to risk fatal exposure and the perseverance demanded on the quest for achievement. These are not solely physical feats, they are mental conquests.

The Pro Ride Crew go Snowmobiling in Whistler Backcountry

Once again it was the time of the year for the Pro Ride campers to go snowmobiling.  The snowmobiling trip is included for all Pro Ride courses between 8 - 12 weeks in length so we all set out on Saturday February 23rd to The Adventure Group office to sign up our waivers and get ready to head out for a day of backcountry snowmobiling.  The drive to Cougar Mountain was just 15 minutes north of Whistler Village but you are really out in the elements passing big lakes and beautiful mountains.

The Pro Ride crew has ventured to Niseko, Japan for a mid season powder adventure. Niseko is located in Hokkaido, the north island of Japan, about 2 hours from the city of Sapporo. As soon as you get off the plane in Sapporo you notice a change…. Not only is the culture wildly different and endlessly interesting, but everywhere you there are snow banks well over head height. This sight can’t help but get you a little excited, and as you drive from Sapporo to the resort town of Niseko the snow banks just get bigger and bigger.

Pow for day 1

Today we hit the hill with our first campers of the season. We were greeted with 22cm of new snow, on top of the 38cm from the day before. Everyone came out of the gate swinging, and at some stages wading out of all the new snow. In the end everyone came away from the day stoked, ready to push it, and learn more tomorrow.

Julian, Gillian, and Raf stoked on all the pow in the trees.

Roy reaching for a grab on day one.

Will Jackways goes huge!

Pro Ride friend and New Zealand shredder Will Jackways spent last season working hard on his VideoGrass part. All the work mus have paid off, because Will came away with the ender. Here is a clip of Will going big big big. Check out his whole part in VideoGrass' 2013 feature "Enlighten".

Whistler Blackcomb has posted it's first installment in their "Wonder Reels" series, gearing up for winter. We really didn't need another teas for the coming winter season. The filming and timlaps' are awesome, this video is worth the watch... You'll be wanting to put on your snow gear after this, so make sure your at home. The good people at Whistler Blackcomb were even nice enought to do a snowboard friendly version of the video to go along with the ski one.
